Agouti Group

Chestnut
At birth the body appears black on top with pink/white under the chin, on the chest, belly and inside of legs. By 2 weeks a brown or tan triangle appears at the base of the neck. Chestnut has white eye circles laced with tan and white in the nose. A ring pattern should be visible when you blow into the coat by the age of 6 weeks. Eye color is brown.

Chinchilla
At birth the body appears black on top with pink/white under the chin, on the chest, belly and inside of the legs. Soon a silvery looking triangle appears at the base of the neck and the body will become a grey flecked with silver and black. The rabbit will have white eye circles and white lace in the nose. A ring pattern should be seen when blowing into the coat. Brown is the desired eye color, but blue-gray is acceptable.

Lynx
The body appears lilac at birth. As the kit ages the coat will come in like a tan/fawn color (really light orange/yellow.) The rabbit should have white eye circles and white in the nose. The lynx should have a ring pattern when you blow into the coat. Eye color is Gray.

Opal
Body color will appear gray/blue at birth with a pink belly, chest and inside of legs. The opal gets a tan triangle at the base of the neck. Eye circles are white with tan, as is the nose lacing. A ring pattern can be appreciated when you blow into the coat. Eye color is gray.

Squirrel
The body at birth is blue/gray with a pink belly, chest and inside of legs. It develops much like opal but does not get a tan pattern. Eye circles and nose lacing will be white without a tan pattern. Eye color is gray.

Unshowable Colors

Steel
The kit appears black at birth. As the coat comes in a tan triangle appears at the base of the neck, looking like a chestnut. (However you will know it isn't, because a chestnut has white underbelly.) There will not be any eye circles or white on the belly, nor will there be a ring pattern when you blow into the coat. Steels can be gold tipped or silver tipped and eye color depends on this. This is currently NOT an accepted color and cannot be shown.

Sable Chinchilla
At birth the baby appears to be a normal chinchilla and may continue to look normal up to 2-3 weeks old. The color begins to fade into a brownish/sable color. (The picture above is a junior with terrible coat, but you can clearly see the faded difference in the babies head.) This is currently not an accepted color by ARBA and cannot be shown.

Dutch/Vienna Marked
Colors vary. This is the result of breeding a BEW (Blue eyed white) to a rabbit that does not carry the Vienna gene. These are not showable in any breed, and take on the dutch color pattern of the Dutch breed. Eyes and toenails can be any color. These are often used to breed back to BEW rabbits.

BEW carrier
Note the bright blue eyes. This color of eye is ONLY supposed to be on a solid white, blue eyed white rabbit. If you have bright blue eyes like this on any rabbit of any color it is probably a vienna mark. "Dutch" markings vary, just like they do in the actual dutch breed. They can be very noticable, or barely there.

Chocolate Tortoise Shell
Body is pink at birth and changes to a bright orange. As the shading comes in the brown will be very very light and blends in with the orange body color. The chocolate tort will never have eye circles or a white belly. Eye color is brown. Toenails are dark. This is not a showable color.

Frosted Pearl
Frosted pearl is exactly like Pointed white, except the eyes are blue and the points are often lighter. This is not a showable color. The junior in the picture is a frosted pearl. The mom is a Ruby Eyed White.

Broken Group

Broken means any color in conjunction with white. Toenails must all match (by either being all dark, or all white. They cannot be mis-matched. Eye color depends on what the base color of the broken animal is. All brokens must have at least 10% color on their body to be showable. If they don't, they're referred to as "charlies." It is preferred that the ears be all one solid color, as must there be complete colored eye circles around the eyes. This is broken tort.

A full butterfly is preferred. Absense of any color on the nose is a disqualification. A rabbit may be shown with a half butterfly (only color on one side of the nose) but it's counted on as a fault and the degree of fault varies from judge to judge. This picture shows a typical broken tort color with excellent color, complete eye circles, color on the ears and a full butterfly (see picture inset.) The bunny in the hat also has a full butterfly. He is broken blue.

Self Group

Black
I'm posting two pictures of this color because it goes through a phase where the body is gray. It will eventually revert back to being fully black.

Black (with gray phase)
Black simply is black. Juniors with baby coats will turn gray. This will eventually molt out and become black. Stray white hairs are common in some lines, but the darkest black coat is preferred. Toenails are dark. Eye color is brown. Any spots of white is a disqualification. White spots/hairs can come from injuries or bites and may not be genetically related.

Blue
Blue is rich a dark gray color on the entire body. Toenails are dark. Eye color is blue-gray. Any other color on the body is a disqualification.

Blue Eyed White
Color is bright white. Eyes are to be the brightest pure blue. Toenails are white.

Red Eyed White
Color is bright white. Eyes are to be the brightest red/pink. Toenails are white. White's can sometimes be genetically broken and throw broken babies.

Chocolate
Chocolate color is to be a rich brown. Eye color is brown and has a red sheen when light hits it. Toenails are dark.

Lilac
Lilac is a lighter, smokey version of blue. It is the dilute to chocolate and the eyes also have a red sheen when light hits them. Toenails are dark. Eyes are blue-gray.

Pointed White
At birth the body is bright pink and will be covered by white fur at first. Pointed white is basically the color pattern of the Californian or Himilayian rabbit. The body is white, with color on the nose, ears, tail and feet. Sometimes it can take as much as 3 months before the points darken enough to know what you have. Eye color is red. Points can be black, chocolate, lilac or blue. Toenails should be dark.

Shaded Group

Sable Point (lighter)
This color is born light pink and turns into a cream color. Soon shading appears on the nose, ears, flanks and tail. Eye color is brown, toenails are dark. Some sable points are very light (this picture.)

Sable Point (darker)
This picture shows the darker version of sable point, which is my favorite. It can take on almost a pink color with gray or silver shading on the nose, ears, flanks and tail. Eye color is still brown, toenails are dark.

Siamese Sable
Body color is dark brown, but some may have a silver-gray look at birth. Different shades of brown can be appreciated at different stages in the coats' life. The face will be the darkest brown. Eye color is brown, toenails are dark.

Siamese Smoke Pearl
Body is blue at birth. As the coat ages, the face and saddle will develop a deeper, richer blue. The rest of the body will be a beige-gray. The eye color is gray, toenails are dark.

Tortoise Shell
Body color are birth is a golden pink. As fur comes in it will turn a light orange-tan. The face will have a black or charcoal-gray mask. The same color will appear on the ears, feet, tail, flanks, haunches and belly. Eye color is brown.

Blue Tortoise Shell
At birth the body color is pink, but changes to a straw color when the coat comes in. Blue shading appears on the face, ears, flanks, haunches, belly, feet and tail. Eye color is blue-gray. Toenails are dark.

Wide Band Group

Orange
Body is pink at birth. As the coat comes in, the top of it will turn a bright orange and the belly and underside of the tail and chin will be white. There are white eye circles and white in the nose and inside of the ears. Eye color is brown. Toenails are dark.

Fawn
Body is pink at birth. The coat will come in as a golden straw and the belly will be white from under the chin to the top of the hind feet and under the tail. There will be white eye circles and white lacing in the nose. There is no ring pattern if you blow into the coat. The eye color should be gray.
